Weekly planting progress climbs


SPRINGFIELD – There were 3.7 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending April 23, according to the weekly crop progress and weather report issued for Illinois Monday.


Statewide, the average temperature was 50.9 degrees, 4.1 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.66 inches; 0.25 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 66 percent adequate, and 26 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 1 percent very short, 9 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 19 percent surplus.


Corn planted reached 18 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 11 percent. Soybeans planted reached 15 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 6 percent.


Winter wheat headed reached 7 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 6 percent. Winter wheat condition was 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 65 percent good, and 13 percent excellent.
