Lacey selected as NREC director

The Illinois Nutrient Research & Education Council (NREC) has selected Corey Lacey, Ph.D., as its next Executive Director. Dr. Lacey begins September 1, 2026.

Dr. Lacey brings experience spanning agricultural research, nonprofit leadership, public policy, and coalition development. He most recently served as Environmental Policy Manager for the Illinois Soybean Association, leading work at the intersection of nutrient stewardship, conservation, policy and farmer profitability.

“Corey brings a strong combination of scientific expertise, agricultural leadership and an understanding of the challenges facing Illinois farmers,” said Don Guinnip, NREC Chairman. “His ability to connect research with practical outcomes will help NREC continue delivering value to Illinois agriculture.”

Dr. Lacey’s connection to NREC began as a graduate researcher conducting NREC-funded research on nutrient management, cover crops and nitrogen cycling. He holds agriculture degrees including a Ph.D. from Purdue University, an M.S. from Illinois State University, and an undergraduate from the University of Arkansas.

“I’m honored to lead an organization that has played an important role in my own career,” Dr. Lacey said. “I look forward to working with the Council, researchers and Illinois agriculture to support impactful research and move science into practice.”
