Spring outlook trending wetter

CHAMPAIGN – Don’t get your hopes up if you were planning to put corn or soybeans in the ground early this spring.

Weather outlooks for the entire state are looking wetter than normal. This includes for the 8 to 14 day forecast, the month of March and the March through May period. Southern Illinois does have the highest chances for the wetter than normal conditions.

“If we do see our active weather pattern continue through this and next month, it will increase the risk of excessively wet soil issues as we move into spring,” said State Climatologist Trent Ford in his weekly weather summary.

Southern Illinois soils are already plenty wet from showers and storms over the past few weeks.

Our mild weather pattern in Central Illinois looks to stay around for a few more days with highs ranging from the upper 40s to 50s with more normal temperatures expected by late February with highs back into the 20s or 30s.

Mild weather continued last week with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal in many locations.

“We have witnessed a top 10 warmest start to the calendar year on record in virtually every long running station in the state,” Ford added.
