Illinois inventory of all hogs and pigs on March 1, 2025 was 5.55 million head, up 1 percent from December 1, 2024 but down 1 percent from last year.


Breeding inventory, at 640,000 head, was up 10,000 from the previous quarter but down 30,000 from last year. Market hog inventory, at 4.91 million head, was up 1 percent from last quarter but down slightly from last year. The December-February 2025 pig crop, at 3.42 million head, was up slightly from 2024.


Sows farrowing during this period totaled 295,000 head, down 15,000 from a year ago. The average pigs saved per litter was 11.60 for the December-February period, compared with 11.00 last year.
