Reports released on sheep, cattle


USDA has released information on sheep and cattle in Illinois.


All sheep and lamb inventory on January 1, 2023, at 53,000 head, is unchanged from January 1, 2022. Breeding sheep inventory, at 45,000 head, is unchanged from last year. Market sheep and lambs on January 1, 2023, totaled 8,000 head, unchanged from January 1, 2022. The 2022 lamb crop of 41,000 head was unchanged from 2021. Wool production during 2022 totaled 150,000 pounds, down 6 percent from 2021. Sheep and lambs shorn totaled 25,000 head, down 4 percent from 2021.


All cattle and calves as of January 1, 2023, totaled 1.00 million head, unchanged from January 1, 2022. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 420,000 head, are unchanged from a year ago. The 2022 calf crop was estimated at 365,000 head, down 1 percent from 2021.
