Planting ahead of schedule

SPRINGFIELD - There were 4.8 days suitable for field work during the week ending April 18, according to the weekly crop progress and weather report issued for Illinois on Monday.


Statewide, the average temperature last week was 49.5 degrees, 3.4 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.14 inches, 0.83 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 1 percent very short, 8 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 1 percent very short, 9 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 12 percent surplus.


Corn planted reached 12 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 8 percent. Soybeans planted reached 5 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 1 percent.


Winter wheat headed was 5 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 4 percent. Winter wheat condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 21 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 16 percent excellent.
