NASS releases organic survey report
The National Agricultural Statistics Service has released the organic survey report, which includes results for Illinois.
There were 258 certified organic farms in the state during 2019, operating more than 60,000 acres of certified organic land including pasture and cropland. These 258 farms generated over $72 million in organic sales compared to $60 million in 2017 – an increase of 20 percent.
Crop sales including nursery and greenhouses accounted for $53 million in sales while livestock and livestock products like eggs and milk represent 26 percent of the total or $19 million.
Illinois had $37 million in field crop sales or more than half of the grand total. Organic vegetable sales totaled $7 million, organic milk sales were $2.3 million and organic egg sales were $13.6 million.
