Growers hopeful for more rain

DWIGHT – Northern Livingston County farmer Dan Parker is thankful for rain in recent weeks but is hopeful for more.

He spent some time with his family at the Livingston County Fair last week, enjoying the beautiful weather for fair week. In fact, he cannot remember a fair with that nice of weather.

“We haven’t had any rain to spoil our events down here but we’d sure take a rain for our crops,” Parker told The Central Illinois Farm Network on Saturday.

Parker’s kids showed pigs and cattle at the fair and their 4-H group had several projects entered.

Parker feels his crops look pretty good after recent rains helped save them but he wants to keep the rain coming.

“If we can keep some rains coming toward the end of the year and fill out well, I think we’ll have a decent crop,” he notes.

There may be a decent kernel count out there now, but what made the crop last year was how it filled in at the end. Parker thinks we are set up to be as good or better than last year’s yield potential.

“We have a lot of moisture in the soil to carry us through if we don’t get the rains,” added Parker.

In addition to farming, Parker has a Channel Seed dealership with Jason Bunting selling corn and soybeans mainly in Livingston County. There are different traits coming out that they are evaluating and deciding which ones will yield best. Parker also notes several different root control options are in the works.
