FFA auctions return to in-person
The annual Pontiac FFA fundraising auction and dinner returned as an in-person event this year after being online in 2021.
“This year, it is nice to see everybody’s faces. The older people and even some of the younger alumni like to see us in our official dress,” explained Pontiac FFA reporter Christopher Corrigan.
Students visited several local businesses asking for donations in recent weeks, ahead of Saturday’s event at Pontiac Township High School.
“Really, anything helps our local auction,” admitted Pontiac FFA vice-president Paige Olson.
“I’ve been getting a lot of donations, whether it’s going to the stores or calling them along with doing the online aspect,” added Corrigan.
Money raised each year helps students attend conventions at the national level along with various field trips and chapter exchanges. The year is going well for the Pontiac FFA and the February chapter meeting takes place this week with a national officer there.
“So far, we are chugging away at different competitions,” said Olson.
Pontiac FFA Alumni members helped at Saturday’s auction and dinner. Alumni also help as guest speakers, chaperones and tour hosts throughout the year. They judge and offer help at the food stand for the Section 9 Proficiency Awards and host individual competitions for FFA members in March.
The alumni help with the scholarship raffle in the spring and award members scholarships to pursue higher education each April.
“Everything was great,” Pontiac FFA advisor Jesse Faber said of the auction. “We exceeded our goal and are grateful for everyone who came out.”
FFA is a student-led organization not only for those wishing to go into production agriculture. It also accepts members looking to be doctors, teachers, scientists, business owners and more. The National FFA Organization provides a path to achievement for students in personal growth, career success and premier leadership through agricultural education.
The organization’s motto is, “learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live and living to serve.”
