Illinois inventory of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 2022 was 5.30 million head, up 2 percent from September 1, 2022 but down 2 percent from last year.


Breeding inventory, at 660,000 head, was up 70,000 from the previous quarter and up 70,000 from last year. Market hog inventory, at 4.64 million head, was up 1 percent from last quarter but down 4 percent from last year.


The September-November 2022 pig crop, at 3.00 million head, was up 10 percent from 2021. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 280,000 head, up 25,000 from a year ago. The average pigs saved per litter was 10.70 for the September-November period, unchanged from last year.
