Weekly crop progress report issued


SPRINGFIELD – There were 3.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 31, according to the weekly crop progress and weather report issued Monday for Illinois.

Statewide, the average temperature was 70.1 degrees, 3.9 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.99 inches, 0.02 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 3 percent short, 70 percent adequate, and 27 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 28 percent surplus.

Corn planted reached 92 percent compared to the previous year at 42 percent and the 5-year average of 86 percent. Corn emerged reached 76 percent compared to the previous year at 29 percent and the 5-year average of 77 percent. Corn condition was rated at 2 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 8 percent excellent.

Soybeans planted reached 74 percent compared to the previous year at 19 percent and the 5-year average of 68 percent. Soybeans emerged reached 50 percent compared to the previous year at 12 percent and the 5-year average of 51 percent. Soybeans condition was rated at 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.

Winter wheat headed was at 86 percent compared to the previous year at 84 percent and the 5-year average of 94 percent. Winter wheat condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 8 percent excellent.
