Mackinson weighs-in on 2019
PONTIAC – Livingston County dairy farmer Jesse Mackinson describes 2019 as challenging so far.
His family got their corn and soybeans in the ground but making hay is a serious challenge. Also, crops in Mackinson’s area are behind where they need to be for this time of the year.
“Being farmers, we like challenges so we’ll take the challenges in stride and go from there,” Mackinson told The Central Illinois Farm Network.
Mackinson milks 125 cows which always keeps him busy.
“One way or the other, we have to have corn to feed the cows so we made sure we got the corn in the ground,” Mackinson explained.
Typically by the time Sept. 1 rolls around, you can put in a new crop of corn silage but this year it could be Oct. 1 meaning producers need to watch their inventories a bit closer.
Mackinson encourages anyone with questions about agriculture to ask a farmer.
“We are just as willing to work hard to feed people as we are to educate them too.”
