Post-emergence work continues

GRIDLEY – Spraying and side dressing activities are underway on area fields but some areas have received too much rain in the past week to get much work done.

“We’ve had trouble getting back in to get our post spraying done on corn and beans but we’ve been trying to keep up the best we can,” said Bill Roth, manager of the Brandt Consolidated Gridley location.

Roth said farmers in his area had a nice stretch of weather during the first part of June and were able to get about 95 percent of crops in the ground. All of those crops are up now. Roth estimates growers near Gridley are more than half done with nitrogen side dress.

“The corn that was planted in April is too big and the corn that was planted in May is getting about borderline right now.”

The next concern is getting more residuals down to keep bean fields clean which is going to be a challenge. Roth believes it can be a tough task to get done in a timely manner.
