Planting progress creeps ahead
SPRINGFIELD – There were 2.4 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 19, according to the weekly crop progress and weather report for Illinois issued Monday afternoon.
Statewide, the average temperature was 63.5 degrees, 0.1 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.85 inches, 0.16 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 44 percent adequate and 56 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 39 percent adequate and 61 percent surplus.
Corn planted was at 24 percent, compared to 95 percent last year and the 5-year average of 89 percent. Corn emerged was at 11 percent. Soybeans planted were at 9 percent, compared to 79 percent last year and the 5-year average of 51 percent. Soybeans emerged was at 2 percent.
Winter wheat headed reached 64 percent, compared to 70 percent last year and the 5-year average of 75 percent. Winter wheat condition was rated at 8 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 34 percent good, and 4 percent excellent.
