PONTIAC – With all of the warm and dry weather as of late, it’s amazing there weren’t more field fires here in Central Illinois this week.

A field fire Thursday afternoon near Pontiac apparently started in a field that had already been combined, according to the Pontiac Fire Department. The blaze was quickly approaching standing corn as crews arrived on the scene and strong winds helped carry the fire.

Pontiac firefighters were assisted by departments in Cullom, Saunemin, Fairbury, Odell, Chenoa, Flanagan and Gridley along with Livingston County Sheriff’s Police, State Police and Duffy Ambulance. Neighboring farmers brought out equipment to help contain the fire.
