Ag a big part of Fairbury Fair

Kimberly Petersen comes from a family of showers so it’s no surprise she helps with the Fairbury Fair swine show every year and serves as secretary on the fair board.

Petersen considers the fair a fun time for families to spend together and the perfect end-of-summer celebration for kids who want to show their animals one last time.

“(The Fairbury Fair) shows swine, cattle, sheep, lambs, rabbits, pigeons, poultry and goats,” Petersen said.

Wednesday’s swine show is typically an all-day event to kick off the Fairbury Fair.

“We open with the junior show which is followed by a showmanship class and then Ifft Yorkshires donates pork burgers we have for lunch,” Petersen added.

The fair sticks to its agricultural roots each year by holding the antique tractor parade through the carnival midway on Sunday afternoon. The event keeps growing with more and more tractors participating.

“Last year, the front of the line was already off the grounds before the back of the line had even left the starting point,” recalled fair board member Craig Monson.

Thursday night’s meat goat show is always a big draw with several kids participating.

“It’s fun to watch,” Monson admitted. “Usually it involves cash prizes and that money really doesn’t leave the fairgrounds as the kids buy ride tickets.”

The 2018 Fairbury Fair runs through Sunday at the fairgrounds on the south end of town.
