FORREST – An area farm equipment company started by farmers is filling a need for growers near and far.

Forrest-based Vulcan Equipment sells products its farmer owners came up with to assist in their own operation.

“We’re trying to just provide real world experience in the form of our equipment,” explained finance manager Lincoln Slagel.

Slagel works with his dad, Don, and uncle, Mark, who were the ones that came up with the designs for Vulcan products based on past experiences. The Slagels travel to several farm shows each year stretching from western Nebraska to Indiana.

“We are small but we’ve got decent production capabilities and we’re looking forward to hopefully getting in contact with more farmers,” Slagel added.

The Slagels were at the Greater Peoria Farm Show in November, displaying a 12-row complete ZoneMaster system on a new flat fold tool bar. This was designed for strip-till farmers and uses vertical tillage to create the proper planting atmosphere. According to the company website, ZoneMaster can cover several acres very quickly and can run at speeds of up to 13 miles per hour.
