View from the Cab: Accomplishments
Just when a feeling of accomplishment sets in, it’s time to jump to the next thing.
In agriculture, we don’t often have time to soak up all that we have accomplished. We immediately switched back to harvesting soybeans after finishing the corn last Monday with no break in between. Even though all of the crops are not in as I write this, it still feels pretty good to have the corn done. I have noticed quite a few corn fields still standing in the countryside.
I’m sure once the soybeans are finished, we will immediately jump into fall fieldwork as long as the weather cooperates. I guess the celebrating can come in the winter. Many folks think farmers have all of the time in the world during the cold months, but we manage to stay busy with office work, meetings and making plans for the upcoming season.
The busy farm meeting season starts later this month with the Farm Assets Conference Tuesday, Nov. 21 in Normal. Discussion will focus on the Farm Bill and Precision Conservation Management. Also, Eric Snodgrass of Agrible will talk about the world’s weather while Bruce Sherrick will explore farmland prices. Sherrick is from the TIAA Center for Farmland Research at the University of Illinois. Look for complete coverage from the Farm Assets Conference on The Central Illinois Farm Network website.
Illinois’ largest indoor farm show returns to the Peoria Civic Center later in the month. The Greater Peoria Farm Show will be held Nov. 28-30 with more than 150,000 square feet of ag exhibits. The center is filled with over 350 companies representing 1,000 product lines and services. More information can be found online at www.greaterpeoriafarmshow.com.
There is a small break during the holidays, but look for more farm meetings and shows early in the year right up until the next spring planting season. Can’t believe we are already talking about the holidays when we still have Thanksgiving on the way. I guess I don’t feel so bad bringing up the subject since some commercial radio stations have already adopted the all-Christmas music format.
