Safety still important this fall

LEXINGTON – Even though harvest is finished for most, safety should still remain a top priority as growers continue applying anhydrous ammonia and dry fertilizer.

Brandt Consolidated field advisor Kelsey McNamara says farmers should consider using a nitrogen inhibitor to keep ammonia from converting into a non-usable form.

“Apply it only when soil temperatures are favorable, of course,” McNamara told The Central Illinois Farm Network recently.

Being a good steward when applying nitrogen or dry fertilizer is becoming more critical, especially as we approach freezing conditions.

“We encourage our growers to be mindful and consider next year’s needs and what should be applied yet before we reach frozen ground conditions.”

McNamara believes safety should always be everyone’s top priority – especially this time of year. This is also a critical time for success with fall burndown applications before the weather changes.
