There were 6.1 days suitable for field work during the week ending August 20, according to the weekly crop progress and weather report issued for Illinois this week.


Statewide, the average temperature was 69.8 degrees last week which was, 4.1 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.72 inches, 0.14 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 6 percent very short, 21 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 9 percent very short, 25 percent short, 63 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus.


Corn dough reached 80 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 81 percent. Corn dented reached 39 percent, equal to the 5-year average. Corn mature reached 1 percent, equal to the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.


Soybeans setting pods reached 86 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 83 percent. Soybean condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 11 percent excellent.
