View from the Cab: Kids dig farm scene

By: Kent Casson

I am extremely proud of our three kids as they are really digging the farm kid life.

Kasen has become a big help with mowing our large yard. Since late summer, he and I have mowed the yard together with two lawn mowers. He never leaves grass standing and does an incredible job. I think Kasen is just happy he is finally heavy enough for the mower not to turn off when he tries to drive away.

Having two mowers running cuts my mowing time in half, so I’m very happy about this. Perhaps next summer Kasen will be mowing a farm yard or two with me. He is doing great out in the open areas.

Though she’s only nine years old, Kenadee is great at steering in a straight line in the auger wagon tractor. She is extremely focused and says she wants to be a farmer someday. I think she would make a great one!

When school is out, she is usually right out there in the field with me riding along in whatever I am driving such as the tractor or combine. She says she prefers the auger wagon tractor over the combine.

Little Kaislee isn’t always a fan of riding along in the tractor or combine but she goes along with flow, most of the time. Though Kaislee doesn’t show much interest in touching the controls, she does like to turn on the flashers and honk the horn once in a while. While in the cab, Kaislee will usually give me the day’s rundown such as what she ate for preschool snack and what she had for lunch at the babysitter.

My wife Rebecca is the true glue that keeps this family together. She often shuttles out a kid or two to see me in the field after school before driving to another town to pick up someone from practice. When there’s time, Rebecca even climbs in the cab and rides along for a few rounds with the kids. After all these years, we somehow all fit into that cab together.

Fall isn’t the only time our kids are hard workers on the farm. Summer is typically filled with livestock chores as we have our calves out in the shed to take care of during fair season. Seeing Kaislee work with a pitchfork is priceless. The older two often walk the calves, clean-up their areas and feed them.
