Planting still ahead of schedule

SPRINGFIELD – There were 4.2 days suitable for field work during the week ending May 16, according to the weekly crop progress and weather report issued Monday for Illinois.


Statewide, the average temperature last week was 52.3 degrees, 9.7 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.40 inches, 0.54 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 1 percent very short, 10 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 20 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 2 percent very short, 13 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus.


Corn planted reached 86 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 71 percent. Corn emerged reached 59 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 48 percent. Soybeans planted reached 71 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 40 percent. Soybeans emerged reached 40 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 16 percent.


Winter wheat headed was 85 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 69 percent. Winter wheat condition was rated 4 percent poor, 13 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 22 percent excellent.
