Growers face tough cold weather decisions

GRIDLEY – With all of these cold nights, some farmers are playing the waiting game on planting corn.
Josh Schick, who farms in Livingston, McLean and Woodford counties, considers this a different spring since it has been so cool.
“Last Saturday, planting through snow squalls was quite interesting,” admits Schick. “I’ve never done that before.”
Though the air temperature was chilly, soil conditions were near perfect.
“I think a lot of guys are going to go back and forth on what to do with the cold weather this week. Hopefully we all make the right decision,” said Schick.
Schick has a few more soybeans to finish planting this week and had not started on his corn as of Monday. With all of the pre-plant herbicide sprayed, he will be ready to go once the weather is fit for corn planting.
“The weather isn’t quite right.”
For the last few years, Schick’s May planted corn has performed better than his earlier corn.
