Thanksgiving dinner price unchanged

Dinner for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday will cost $48.91 on average for a 10-person feast. That price is pretty much unchanged from 2018.

The information comes from the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 34th annual survey. This cost has increased one cent from last year. Here in Illinois, the meal costs $44.82. The cost of a 16-pound bird is $20.80 which is slightly less than last year. This translates to around $1.30 per pound, four percent lower from 2018. The retail price is the lowest since 2010.

Items included in the Farm Bureau’s survey include: turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, peas, cranberries, rolls with butter, veggie tray, pumpkin pie, milk and coffee.

Chief Economist John Newton, Ph.D. with the AFBF, says many individuals do not realize only eight cents of every dollar consumers spend on food goes to farmers.
