Stine addresses local farmers

ARROWSMITH – The president of Stine Seed Company visited with Central Illinois growers last week during the annual BCS seed meeting at Arrowsmith.

The family company is based in central Iowa and has a goal of bringing farmers the right genetics as cost efficiently and quickly as possible.

“We are very different from other seed companies,” said Myron Stine.

Stine’s father started the company and he has a brother, two sisters and two nephews now involved with the business. Stine said the company works with every single soybean trait platform in the industry.

When it comes to Xtend soybeans, Stine said he likes the genetics but has issues with the weed control program. GT27 beans use glyphosate with an HPPD inhibitor. This is an enzyme used by the plant to break down tyrosine, an amino acid. Stine feels HPPD inhibitors are the best chemistry for corn right now while GT27 soybeans defend growers from carryover.

The Enlist E3 soybean was just approved in February. This allows for ease of use and excellent yield with good weed control.

“We’ve been waiting on it for 10 years,” Stine explained.

This new chemistry is not expected to have volatility issues and it is tolerant to new 2,4-D choline, glyphosate and glufosinate.

“It kills weeds and it really is a wonderful product.”

There are no spring restrictions like competing platforms and it is cost effective. Stine feels all of these trait platforms are competitive in the marketplace.

“Our job is to continually bring that material to you,” he added.
