Crops are 'coming along'

CROPSEY – Crops around Central Illinois may not all have emerged at the same time, but are coming along nicely.

Early planted corn on the well-tiled fields looks good and is starting to tassel while the early planted soybeans are starting to bloom. Many growers are now considering fungicide applications.

“Even the later planted (beans) have pretty good emergence and are coming along,” said Bryan Cole, manager of the Brandt Consolidated Cropsey location.

Cole has noticed Japanese beetles moving into the area feeding on the ends of fields. He says this is something to keep an eye on moving forward. Also, not one fungicide recommendation is going to fit all this year with erratic emergence and differing planting dates. Growers will need to have one-on-one conversations with their ag retailer this summer.

According to Cole, his crews have been wrapping-up spraying especially on the dicamba acres as we approach the July 15 deadline.

“We can’t go out and spray everyday on that product so we’re just trying to get those acres covered and the Liberty acres covered as well.”
