View from the Cab: Choices, choices
We can all take a break from those insulting statewide political commercials and robo-calls now that the Primary Election is over.
Wait a minute – the November General Election is coming so there is no break in sight. The ads for the fall will likely start at any moment since this will probably be the most expensive gubernatorial campaign in Illinois history. I received at least five automated phone calls voicing support for a certain candidate the Monday before Election Day. This makes me wonder why we still have a landline at home.
In case you missed it, incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner defeated Jeanne Ives for the nomination while Democrat J.B. Pritzker defeated Daniel Biss, Chris Kennedy, Tio Hardiman, Bob Daiber and Robert Marshall.
The former businessman Rauner has served as Illinois governor since January 2015. Prior to being elected, he was the chair of R8 Capital Partners and chair of the GTCR private equity firm based in Chicago. You may recall Rauner defeated Pat Quinn four years ago. Pritzker is also a business owner who is based in Chicago. The co-founder and managing partner for the Pritzker Group is also tied to a family known for the Hyatt Hotel group.
Our choices for Illinois Attorney General come November include Democrat Kwame Raoul and Republican Erika Harold. Raoul beat out several contenders in last week’s primary, including Pat Quinn, Sharon Fairley, Nancy Rotering, Scott Drury, Jesse Ruiz, Renato Mariotti and Aaron Goldstein. Harold, on the other hand, defeated fellow Republican Gary Grasso for the nomination.
Raoul serves as a Democratic state senator, representing the 13th district and is also an attorney. He was initially appointed in 2004 to fill Barack Obama’s old seat. He is the chair of the Senate Pension and Investments Committee along with the Redistricting Committee. Harold is also an attorney who previously ran as a Republican for the 13th Congressional seat. She may be best known for being crowned Miss America in 2003 and Miss Illinois prior to that.
Now you have a head start on becoming an informed statewide voter this fall.
