Good time for burndown

FAIRBURY – We are still within the time frame for fall burndown applications which allow growers to get a head start on weed control for the following year.

The period from Halloween to Thanksgiving is perfect for spraying those acres going into no-till production says Brad Schmidgall, plant manager for the Fairbury Brandt Consolidated location.

“Winter annuals have become a bigger issue, primarily on the no-till acres. It’s something that needs to be addressed in the fall,” Schmidgall told The Central Illinois Farm Network.

Many weeds establish themselves once crops have been harvested in the fall, even though they may be tough to see from the road. Come springtime, the weeds can take off leading to a headache for growers just before planting.

Schmidgall said Brandt has had a good run this fall applying fertilizer and anhydrous ammonia. As fall work concludes, growers and ag retailers will be busy making chemical and seed plans for 2018.
