DECATUR – Farmers can see the latest ag innovations at this week’s Farm Progress Show in Decatur.

New Holland revealed a brand new methane-powered tractor during the show’s opening day Tuesday.

“The main thing here is green energy, low emissions, a quieter tractor and cheaper operation,” explained Mark Howell, global products manager of alternative fuels at New Holland.

Howell says this is the future of ag as the cab has been “de-cluttered” to make things easier for the tractor operator. Methane can be sourced as a bio fuel or fossil fuel and can be obtained from a bio gas plant or the grid. Biomethane is produced from both farm grown energy crops and from waste products and crop residues.

According to a news release from the company, performance of the methane-powered tractor is identical to a diesel engine, particularly in terms of maximum power and torque. The durability matches that of a standard power unit and is complimented by a cost savings of up to 30 percent.

Case IH spotlighted its launch of the next generation series Maxxum tractor for model year 18. The tractors, which were originally launched in 1989, feature a new style.

“Not only does it look good, but it’s functional,” said Corey Reed, Case IH product specialist.

The tractor includes a new transmission where comfort comes into play since everything is controlled at your fingertips, including the power shift gear change and electric range shifting. This eliminates the need for a foot clutch.

“We expect to see them in our dealer lots toward the end of the year,” Reed added.

Case IH is celebrating 175 years and has a special Farm Progress Show display of machines from yesterday and today. A classic Axial-Flow combine was getting some attention parked outside.

The 2017 Farm Progress Show runs through Thursday at Progress City USA near Richland Community College in Decatur.
