Livingston County Fair rolls on

PONTIAC – It wouldn’t be the Livingston County Fair without some rain.

That’s exactly what happened Monday morning as the fair opened at 4-H Park near Pontiac. Fair board member Josh Donze said a little shower is not going to slow the event down. He notes all of the behind-the-scenes work which makes the fair happen.

“4-H clubs and 4-H parents come out and clean up the fairgrounds and just help us in general getting everything set up,” Donze explained.

According to Donze, fair board members can’t do everything by themselves so they owe a big thanks to those who help out. This week’s fair includes plenty of entertainment options including pig races, a rodeo and two nights of monster trucks.

There are plenty of food options on the grounds with St. Mary’s staffing the kitchen and Prairie Farms serving ice cream. Also, you will find plenty of the traditional fair favorites such as lemon shake-ups and popcorn.

“The 4-H kids and Ambassadors have their popcorn stand again this year,” added Donze.

Last year’s king, Victor Johns, was sitting near the hog barn Monday. He has eight pigs and two projects being judged. Johns has had an eventful 12 months serving as king.

“I’ve come and talked to my club about opportunities you can have with 4-H.”

Johns believes preparation is key when it comes to showing pigs.

“We start working with them and buying them in March and April and as the summer goes on, we’ve been walking them and working with them everyday.”
