Harvest progresses for Wenger

FAIRBURY – Harvest is progressing on the farms of Dennis Wenger in Livingston County.

He started on soybeans last week and is over half done with his corn acres. Wenger has observed variability out in the field, indicating those areas that could use more drainage.

The area was cool and damp earlier in the season but the summer weather was good overall.

“We are running above-average on the corn,” Wenger told The Central Illinois Farm Network.

Wenger was also pleased with his soybeans.

“They’re probably going to pick up as we get out of the lower ground.”

Though some soybeans still have green stems which make harvesting slow and difficult, recent showers have helped bring them along.

Wenger said a wind event in July impacted some crop varieties but nothing like the past couple of years when the Route 24 corridor was hit by storms.

“This year’s harvest is going really well and we are feeling like we are getting the crop and not suffering any real field loss,” noted Wenger.

A neighbor has been planting cover crops for Wenger. They are planting cereal rye into stalk ground. This week’s rain will likely help with cover crop emergence.

“We needed the showers just to keep some moisture in the soil and fire hazards down.”
