Growing more with fewer resources
One company specializing in biological crop products is helping farmers grow more with fewer resources.
Midwest Bio-Tech has been helping farmers get a biological boost to their bottom line for over 40 years. The method seems to work well, especially in these times of uncertain input prices and high fuel costs.
“We’ve been able to help farmers save on those nutrient costs and still produce a good crop,” explained Midwest Bio-Tech vice president Doug Miller.
Miller had plenty of interest from those attending the recent Greater Peoria Farm Show and he anticipates a busy time during the upcoming Gordyville farm show Jan. 25 and 26 at Booth 514.
A popular product currently is called Biocat 1,000 allowing more resources to use from the previous crop without having to put on additional inputs to raise that crop.
“You spray it on crop residue, and it helps decay it faster so you can recycle those nutrients and get them back available for the plant,” notes Miller.
The enzyme-based liquid product has nothing live in it so it can be mixed with fall herbicide, spring herbicides or can even be put on post emergence. Additional residue breakdown is typically seen within four to five weeks and soil tests show that there are more nutrients available.
Several growers are interested in dry seed coats and Midwest Bio-Tech has had their biological product on the market for 41 years. They’ve had good luck with it.
“We usually see about a 6.5 bushel increase on corn and about 4 to 5 on soybeans,” said Miller.
According to Miller, it doesn’t take much for farmers to get their money back and have a good return on investment.
