Ridgeview, Flanagan auctions up next

You can support a couple of area FFA chapters this weekend while enjoying a great meal and auction.

Both the Flangan-Cornell and Ridgeview FFA chapters will hold their annual fundraisers at their respective schools in Flanagan and Colfax Saturday evening.

The Flanagan-Cornell event starts with a tour of the school’s four-year-old greenhouse from 4:30-6 p.m. Dinner will consist of pork chop or ribeye sandwiches in the cafeteria from 5-6:30 p.m. A silent auction will be open from 5-7 p.m. with the live auction at 6:30 in the west gym.

“It’s really great – the outpouring of support we get from all over,” said FC FFA advisor Jessica Collins.

FCHS senior and FFA president Rosalee Zehr was recently named the District 2 Star Farmer, which is exciting news for the chapter. This means she had the best production agriculture record book in the northeastern part of the state.

“Rosalee raises dairy cattle,” Collins explained. “She has about 30 head in her book right now.”

Zehr will head to Champaign in a few weeks to interview for the state Star Farmer honor and this week, she is interviewing for district proficiency awards in dairy entrepreneurship.

Flanagan-Cornell’s FFA lost several dedicated seniors last year but the younger students have stepped up to take over new roles. FFA members remain active with community service projects and several students interviewed at section proficiencies. Upcoming events include contests, banquet and greenhouse sales.

Ridgeview’s FFA fundraiser starts with a pork chop meal and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. with the live auction at 7 p.m. in the south gym. Items have been donated by local businesses and community members.

“We’ve got some handmade stuff, I’ve got some things the kids are making and we have a lot of baked goods this year that I’m really excited about,” said Ridgeview FFA advisor Ariel Bunting.

The Ridgeview members are preparing for livestock judging and eventually banquet season. Bunting has a big group of senior officers this year.

“They are really excited about this kind of being their final auction. It’s a little bittersweet.”

More details can be found by searching for Ridgeview FFA on Facebook and they have an alumni page as well.
