Youth can become a swientist

The Illinois Pork Producers Association is teaming up with Ohio State University to host a biosecurity workshop titled “Becoming a Swientist” at the 2019 Illinois State Fair.

All junior swine exhibitors are welcome to join us for a fun afternoon in the barrow barn learning how to keep kids and pigs healthy.

  • WHEN: Wednesday, August 7 at the IL State Fair; 4:00 PM - Workshop Begins; 5:30 Pizza & Panel of Pork Professionals (Parents encouraged to attend the panel)

  • WHERE: Barrow Barn Show Ring (see map below)

  • WHAT: A hands-on workshop with 4 stations of fun, biosecurity-related activities.

  • WHY: IPPA continues to lead the conversation around animal health, especially in a time where the threat of foreign animal disease is more prevalent than ever. Learn how to keep kids and pigs healthy with this fun event.

It will conclude with complementary pizza and a panel of pork professionals at 5:30 pm. Parents are encouraged to join us for the panel discussion. Panelists include: Dr. Andrew Bowman, The Ohio State University; Thomas Titus, IPPA; John Heins, National Pork Board; and Jennifer Shike, Farm Journal’s PORK.

There will be free swag for those in attendance. Plus, each participant will be awarded a free “biosecurity bucket” filled with essentials, courtesy of Ohio State University. After completing four stations learning about human and animal health, the goal is for exhibitors to take the bucket home and put it into action using the skills they learned from the workshop.

Pork Checkoff dollars and funds from Ohio State University were used to host this event free of charge to junior swine exhibitors.
