Hard work, fun at the fair

MELVIN – Summer fairs are great places to learn, work hard and catch up with friends. That’s what participants in this week’s Ford County Fair are doing.

Ty Drach and his sister had a pair of barrows in the champion drive at Monday’s hog show.

“After here, we’ll probably go home for a little bit and just continue working on them trying to make them better,” Drach said. “It takes a lot of work but it’s fun and enjoyable.”

Drach also shows cattle and judges livestock but has a hard time picking a favorite since he enjoys everything he does.

Brynn Boundy was going to do a horse project with a poster board but decided to show pigs instead. Her three animals received third, second and ninth place.

“I just like getting to know other people outside of my own town,” Boundy said.

Madison Deornellas also showed this week at the Ford County Fair. She shows at a few different places during the summer.

“I like seeing all of my friends because it’s very local and I like showing pigs,” Deornellas explained.

Thursday’s highlights at the Ford County Fair include the sheep and beef shows along with the junior rabbit show. A children’s tractor pull will be held at the Dance Building starting at 6 p.m. and the Illiana Truck and Tractor Pull takes place in the grandstand.

Friday night is the big Montgomery Gentry/Mitchell Tenpenny country show and Saturday’s events include the goat, rabbit and poultry shows along with the lawn mower demolition derby and a dance with Guy Lombardo’s Royal Canadians in the Dance Building.

Tickets for the Friday night concert and more information can be found at: www.fordcountyfair.org.
