Farmers make good progress

Corn planting was winding down and farmers made good progress with soybean planting and hay cutting in the latest weekly crop progress and weather report for Illinois.

There were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending June 4. Statewide, the average temperature was 69.9 degrees, 2.1 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.07 inches, 0.84 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 8 percent short, 85 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 4 percent short, 89 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus.

Corn planting was 98 percent complete, the same as the 5-year average. Corn emerged was at 90 percent, compared with 91 percent last year. Corn condition was rated at 2 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.

Soybean planting was 85 percent complete, compared with the 5-year average of 81 percent. Soybeans emerged was at 62 percent. Winter wheat harvest was 1 percent complete, compared to the 5-year average of 3 percent.

Winter wheat condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Pasture and range condition was rated at 2 percent poor, 13 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 28 percent excellent.
