CHAMPAIGN – The fall and winter forecast has been released by the National Weather Service and La Nina is expected to arrive sometime this fall with a 50-60 percent chance of it lasting through winter.

“It didn’t say much for Illinois for either precipitation or temperature in September,” said State Climatologist Jim Angel. “However, their forecast for fall has Illinois and the entire United States with an increased chance of being warmer than normal due to warming trends in recent years.”

Forecasters are remaining neutral in their precipitation forecast, although the winter forecast for Illinois shows an increased chance of above-normal precipitation with neutral temperatures.
