Wheat harvest progresses in report

SPRINGFIELD - Despite periods of rain last week, soybean planting neared completion and farmers made good progress on harvesting wheat and green beans in the weekly crop progress report issued Monday.

Statewide, the average temperature was 77.4 degrees, 4.5 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.84 inches, 0.17 inches below normal. There were 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending June 19. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 4 percent very short, 26 percent short, 66 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 2 percent very short, 18 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.

Corn condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 59 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. Soybeans planted was at 96 percent, compared to 91 percent last year. Soybeans emerged was at 88 percent, up 10 percentage points from last week. Soybeans blooming reached 1 percent. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 14 percent excellent.

Winter wheat harvest was 38 percent complete, a jump of 37 percentage points from last week. Winter wheat condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 13 percent excellent.

Oats headed was at 81 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 82 percent. Pasture and range condition was rated at 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 16 percent excellent.
