Drainage important for final yield

CHATSWORTH – It really doesn’t matter how you place those seeds in the dirt this spring if you don’t have uniform germination with good agronomic conditions in the ground.

Proper field drainage is a big part of final yields in the fall and one area business has the answer.

“We need that good water to air ratio there in the soil to get that uniformity,” explains Tim McGreal of Nu-Ag Technology in Chatsworth, a local Soil-Max tile plow dealer.

The plows have been a good seller for Nu-Ag for farmers in this area and far away. Many growers want to be able to put tile in that small 20, 30 or 40 acre piece of land where it may be hard to get the commercial companies into.

“What we sell here the guys can use with their existing farm equipment and it works really well for them,” McGreal said.

Guys can also do bigger tiling jobs with the Soil-Max plows which are a good fit for the tool shed, according to McGreal. Nu-Ag enjoys dealing with customers and showing them the results proper drainage can lead to.

An open house will likely be held in late summer with field demonstrations.

“We do have a wheat field lined-up and we’ll be doing a demonstration where we install tile on that wheat field.”

While many look forward to harvest season, who knows where the rest of the spring and summer will get us. No one thought we could be looking at possible prevent plant acres once again. That June 5 deadline is rapidly approaching.

“You could very well be seeing some prevent plant again and if that happens, that was a great time last year for guys to get some drainage in,” explained McGreal.

Nu-Ag has tile plows on their lot ready to go if it gets to that point.
