Killian hopes for better weather

LEXINGTON – A fair amount of corn has emerged in Central Illinois, but is coming up uneven in places.

“Hopefully with the heat here, we can start to see it all emerge and even out,” Andy Killian of Brandt told The Central Illinois Farm Network this week. “It needs sunlight, heat and we just need more root growth.”

Some of the emerged corn is yellow due to cool weather with a lack of sunlight recently. The early planted corn was in the ground for about three weeks. Many soybeans were planted earlier than usual and look good where the frost didn’t get to them. The goal on beans is to get them flowering by the longest day of the year.

Killian urges patience when it comes to replanting corn or soybeans as some field ponds are still trying to dry out after last weekend’s heavy rain. Growers should use their best judgement to see what to do next.

According to Killian, adding an application of Smart Trio can help the corn plants along.
