Still minimal harvest activity in Illinois


SPRINGFIELD – There were 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 29, according to the weekly crop progress report issued for Illinois Monday.

Statewide, the average temperature was 68.3 degrees, 6.9 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 2.23 inches, 1.48 inches above normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 8 percent very short, 14 percent short, 55 percent adequate, and 23 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 8 percent very short, 15 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 13 percent surplus.

Corn dented was at 85 percent. Corn mature was at 40 percent. Corn harvested for grain was at 4 percent, compared to 45 percent last year and 30 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition was 5 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 41 percent good, and 6 percent excellent.

Soybean coloring was at 77 percent, compared to 96 percent last year and 92 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean dropping leaves was at 41 percent. Soybean harvest was 1 percent complete. Soybean condition was 5 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 38 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Winter wheat planted was at 4 percent.
