Brown feels fortunate

FORREST – The spring planting season may have been late followed by a dry summer, but Livingston County farmer Roger Brown feels fortunate.

“We don’t know what the end product will be but I know we are better off than a lot of people,” Brown told The Central Illinois Farm Network last week.

Brown, who farms north and east of Fairbury, has noticed worse conditions when he drives north or south from his home. He hasn’t heard any yield check results just yet but did examine one of his own fields.

“In one place, the pollination looked good but there are places where it probably isn’t so good. It depends on the ponds in the field and how much rain fell.”

Like other farmers across the state, Brown has noticed very spotty rainfall on his fields. One farm may get three tenths of an inch while another gets only a trace. Brown believes this fall’s yields will depend on where the rain did or did not fall.
