Helping farmers reach 300 bushels

May 15, 2019

AUBURN – A Midwest manufacturer based in Auburn is trying to help growers get the consistency they need to hit that 300-bushel mark on corn come harvest time.

Springfield Plastics, Inc. produces plastic pipe solutions for agricultural, residential and commercial markets. The 40-year-old company manufactures all of its products from 100 percent virgin material, working closely with farmers to show them the return on investment behind tile jobs.

“We are full service with whatever you need for design work,” explained northern Illinois sales representative Wes Lehman.

The market is hot for tiling and weather played a role in that this year. Wet weather turned into cold weather over the winter with frost going deep into the soil.

“Guys still want jobs to be done because the only way to really make money on a farm is to drain it,” Lehman said. “I don’t care what tractor you drive, what seed you plant or what fertilizer you put on – it has to be drained.”

Lehman says the water table must be down so plants can grow properly. The longer roots cannot breathe, the more yield is lost.

“We try to get that water table down as uniform as possible.”

Lehman covers a large territory in Illinois stretching from Gibson City northward to parts of Indiana. Several company representatives serve surrounding states as well.
