Wheat production up from 2018

USDA issued the crop production report Friday (May 10), which indicates national winter wheat production is up seven percent from 2018.

Production is forecast at 1.27 billion bushels, which is up. As of May 1, the U.S. yield is forecast at 50.3 bushels per acre, up 2.4 bushels from last year’s average yield of 47.9 bushels per acre.

Hard red winter production, at 780 million bushels, is up 18 percent from a year ago. Soft red winter, at 265 million bushels, is down seven percent from 2018. White winter wheat production is down five percent from last year at 224 million bushels.

Illinois information:

For Illinois, the winter wheat harvested area in 2019 is forecast at 560,000 acres, the same as the previous year. The winter wheat yield is forecast at 67 bushels per acre, up one bushel from 2018. Production is forecast at 37.5 million bushels, two percent above the previous year.
