Celebration to honor 4-H

FORREST – A celebration honoring 45 years of 4-H in Forrest is set for Saturday, March 23 at the Forrest Public Library.

Any former member of the Forrest Ladybugs or Fireflies is encouraged to attend from 1 to 4 p.m. to share their stories, memories and projects with others. Mary Vaughan started the Ladybugs club back in 1975 before the name changed.

“I would love any past Forrest Ladybugs or Fireflies to come,” Vaughan said.

A special display is featured at the library during March featuring projects and other items relating to 4-H. Luke Ifft is a current member of the Forrest Fireflies and enjoys horses, photography and citizenship projects.

“There are so many things to do – it’s a lot of fun overall,” Ifft said during the recent Prairie Central FFA Farm and Home Show.

Vaughan has turned over the leadership reins to a couple of local moms, Laura Kerber and Jenna Kilgus, while she still works with the Cloverbuds. Vaughan considers the members a great bunch of kids and believes the new leaders are doing a great job.

In addition to serving as a 4-H leader, Vaughan was actively involved with the Livingston County Fair for a number of years. The former fair board member assisted with kitchen work, oversaw home economics entries and maintained the flowers on the grounds.

“When I started 44 years ago, we didn’t even know what a computer was,” Vaughan joked last summer during an interview about her longtime volunteer work.
