'Best year yet' for Lexington FFA

LEXINGTON – The Lexington High School FFA president is pleased with student involvement this year and believes bigger and better things are happening at the school.

“This has been one of the best years we have had yet,” Kayleigh Laesch said during Saturday’s 6th annual Lexington FFA and Advisory Committee Auction.

Laesch enjoys meeting people from all over the country and likes the fact that everyone involved with FFA has the same passion she does.

This is Brian Wiltz’s first year as FFA advisor in Lexington. The chapter has 35 members, 25 junior high members and 75 students involved in agriculture education. Wiltz has received some help along the way from other section teachers and students.

“I can’t speak enough about my seniors. They have really helped teach me what I need to do,” Wiltz said.

Chapter highlights from the past week include Will Steffen being named a state degree winner and Beth Clark winning her proficiency area in community development. Also, some eighth graders won Discovery Star honors.

“As I get more comfortable in this position, I anticipate we’ll be able to do a lot more things and be really creative,” added Wiltz.

Saturday’s auction raised money for senior scholarships. One of the ag advisory committee members said they raised enough money to keep distributing the scholarships. Committee members include: Yale Young, Kevin Poppe, Russ Derango, Pete Bachman, Jason Birkenbeil, Marlin Miller, Cam McNamara, David Schuler, Kayleigh Laesch, Doug Laesch, Brian Wiltz, Julie Botkin, Amy Laible and Dwight Stricklin.

Lexington FFA members have planned numerous activities for National FFA Week, including camo dress-up day, truck and tractor day and FFA basketball. They will also host an animal fair in the ag shop.
