Field day/market outlook planned

Interested in learning more about how cover crops can improve your soil while contributing to your farm’s profitability?

Join the Vermilion Headwaters Watershed Partnership for a Cover Crop Field Day and market outlook for the 2019 crop year at 9:00 a.m. November 13. The event starts at Jim Ifft’s farm, 21748 E 500 North Rd, Fairbury, looking at the various cover crop plantings Jim has, then travel down the road to an operation that incorporates strip-till with their cover crop rotation. The group then travels to Fairbury for a free lunch and a presentation from Dr. Gary Schnitkey on the “2019 Market Outlook and the Economics of Cover Crops.”

“Every cover crop article I can get my hands on, I read. The concept – it just makes sense to me,” Jim said.

Jim, and his son Josh, have been using cover crops for the past several years. They feel that they are beneficial to their operation and help with the bottom line.

The Vermilion Headwaters Watershed Partnership includes farmers and stakeholders from the 250,000 acre watershed project area in Livingston and Ford Counties. Some of the partners include American Farmland Trust, USDA-NRCS, Livingston and Ford County Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the Soil Health Partnership, The Wetland Initiative, and Livingston County Farm Bureau.
