State harvest progress climbs

There were five days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 21, according to the weekly crop progress and weather report issued Monday.

Statewide, the average temperature was 44.6 degrees, 8.9 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.22 inches, 0.50 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent very short, 5 percent short, 86 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 2 percent very short, 10 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus.

Corn harvested was at 82 percent, compared to 60 percent last year. Soybean harvest was 74 percent complete, compared to 75 percent last year. Sorghum harvested was at 82 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 63 percent. Winter wheat planted was at 53 percent, compared to 67 percent last year. Winter wheat emerged was at 29 percent, compared to 34 percent last year.
