Quarterly hogs & pigs report
Illinois inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1 was 5.45 million head, up 2 percent from June 1 and up 1 percent from last year.
Breeding inventory, at 570,000 head, was unchanged from the previous quarter but up 30,000 from last year. Market hog inventory, at 4.88 million head, was up 2 percent from last quarter and up slightly from last year. The June-August 2018 pig crop, at 2.77 million head, was down 3 percent from 2017. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 260,000 head, down 5,000 from a year ago.
The average pigs saved per litter was 10.65 for the June-August period, compared with 10.75 last year.
