View from the Cab: Thankful for plenty
As we prepare to dine on turkey and pumpkin pie, let’s remember the things we should be thankful for in 2017.
Decent corn and soybean yields. The numbers may not have been great everywhere, but at least we had some extra bushels to offset the low commodity prices this fall.
Empty soybean fields. Thank goodness the beans are out because who knows when we would get back into the field with this occasionally wet weather pattern. We can all breathe a huge sigh of relief!
A warm tractor cab. On those cold final days of harvest, it was nice to sit in the heat and stay out of the wind.
Sleep. The old saying you never know how good something is until it’s gone applies to sleep during harvest. It is nice to get a full night’s sleep for once.
Family. They are the ones who get us through the long days and nights of the growing season. It is always a pleasure to have the family ride along in the tractor.
Autosteer. Thanks to this fancy technology, anyone can have a straight row and you won’t leave any crops standing if everything is operating correctly.
Living in Central Illinois. It may have seemed like a late harvest to us, but it was nothing compared to what the folks in northern Illinois have been experiencing due to wet weather. Let’s hope they get all of the crops out by Christmas.
Our health. Some can’t do everything they would like to due to poor health. We should all take a minute to thank the good Lord for all we have.
I am especially thankful for you, the reader. It means a lot when I get a comment about something I wrote the week before. Also, thanks for counting on The Central Illinois Farm Network for local agricultural news.
Now excuse me while I prepare to chow down two Thanksgiving meals. This means leftover turkey all weekend along with an endless supply of stuffing and mashed potatoes – yet another thing to be thankful for.
